Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • Parmesan cheese grated (for garnish, optional)

Equipment

  • Large skillet or saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Pot for pasta
  • Colander
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until it becomes translucent. Then, add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart with a wooden spoon and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Make sure to drain any excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Season with salt, black pepper, dried basil, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
  4. While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.
  5. Once the sauce is ready, toss the cooked spaghetti into the sauce, mixing until the pasta is well coated. Serve hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese if desired. Enjoy your delightful Spaghetti Bolognese!

Notes

  • Feel free to substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Add extra veggies like bell peppers or mushrooms for more nutrition.
