Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons softened butter divided for toasting the muffins and adding flavor
  • 4 pieces English muffins the base of your sandwich
  • 1/2 pound breakfast sausage use your favorite brand or make your own
  • 1/2 cup water helps steam the eggs for a fluffy texture
  • 4 slices American cheese classic choice for gooey, melty goodness

Equipment

  • Frying pan or skillet
  • Spatula
  • Small bowl
  • Toaster or toaster oven
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. Begin by shaping the breakfast sausage into four patties, about 1/2 inch thick. Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add the sausage patties. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Once done, remove from the pan and set aside.
  2. In the same pan, add 1/2 cup of water and bring it to a simmer. Crack an egg into a small bowl and gently slide it into the pan. Cover the pan with a lid and steam the egg for about 3-4 minutes for a runny yolk or longer for a firmer yolk.
  3. While the eggs are cooking, slice the English muffins in half. Spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter on each half. Toast the muffins in a toaster or on a skillet until they are golden brown.
  4. On the bottom half of each toasted muffin, place a cooked sausage patty. Top with a slice of American cheese, followed by the perfectly cooked egg. Finally, place the top half of the muffin on top to complete your sandwich.
  5. Serve your homemade Sausage Egg McMuffins warm and enjoy them immediately. They are best paired with a hot cup of coffee or your favorite juice!

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, replace the sausage with a plant-based alternative.
