Ingredients

For the Crackers:
  • 1.5 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon granulated white sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 0.5 cup water plus 2 tablespoons, at room temperature
  • Toppings of choice e.g., sesame seeds, poppy seeds, kosher salt, paprika

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Pizza cutter or sharp knife

Method

Cooking Instructions:
  1. Step 1: Prepare the Dough - In a mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well to ensure all the dry ingredients are evenly distributed. Then add the vegetable oil and water. Stir until the mixture forms a rough dough.
  2. Step 2: Knead the Dough - Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for about 5 to 7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough feels too sticky, sprinkle in a little more flour as needed.
  3. Step 3: Rest the Dough - Place the dough back into the mixing bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Preheat the Oven - While the dough is resting, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Step 5: Roll Out the Dough - After the resting period, divide the dough into two equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one portion as thinly as possible, about 1/16 inch thick.
  6. Step 6: Cut the Crackers - Use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife to cut the rolled-out dough into squares or rectangles, depending on your preference.
  7. Step 7: Add Toppings - Brush the surface of the crackers with a little water or oil, then sprinkle your desired toppings on top.
  8. Step 8: Bake - Bake the crackers in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crisp.
  9. Step 9: Cool and Enjoy - Once baked, remove the crackers from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.

Notes

  • Store crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
  • For longer storage, freeze the unbaked dough wrapped tightly in plastic wrap for up to a month.
  • Experiment with different toppings and flavors for variety!
