Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (canola works well)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 whole egg
  • 3 overripe bananas (mashed)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (divided)

Method
 

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that the bread bakes evenly.
  2. Grease your loaf pan with a bit of oil or line it with parchment paper for easy removal once baked.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.
  4. In a separate large bowl, mix the melted butter and vegetable oil. Add in the brown sugar and whisk until smooth. Then, incorporate the egg, mashed bananas, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, folding gently with a spatula. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay!
  6. Fold in about 3/4 cup of the chocolate chips, reserving 1/4 cup to sprinkle on top before baking.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, spreading it evenly.
  8. Top your batter with the reserved chocolate chips for an extra chocolaty finish.
  9. Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • This Chocolate Banana Bread is best enjoyed fresh, but it can also be frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Feel free to experiment with different mix-ins like dried fruit or seeds for added texture and flavor.
  • To make this a vegan treat, you can replace the egg with a flaxseed egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 2.5 tablespoons water).
