Ingredients

For the Pizza:
  • 13 to 14 ounce plant-based Italian sausage links
  • 14 ounce Homemade Pizza Dough
  • Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing and drizzling
  • 0.5 cup grated mozzarella cheese or scoops of Cashew Cream
  • 2 tablespoons chopped red onion
  • 1/4 ounce artichoke hearts drained and quartered
  • 1 cup roasted red peppers and/or roasted tomatoes
  • dollops of pesto
  • Basil leaves
  • Red pepper flakes to taste

Equipment

  • Cast-iron skillet
  • Pizza peel or cutting board
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula

Method

Instructions:
  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). A hot oven is key to achieving that perfect crispy crust.
  2. Step 2: Prepare your Homemade Pizza Dough. Once it has risen, lightly flour a clean surface and roll it out to fit your cast iron skillet.
  3. Step 3: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the plant-based Italian sausage until browned and heated through. Crumble it into bite-sized pieces.
  4. Step 4: Brush the cast iron skillet with extra-virgin olive oil. Place your rolled-out pizza dough in the skillet, pressing it into the edges. Spread a layer of Cashew Cream or sprinkle the grated mozzarella cheese evenly over the dough.
  5. Step 5: Scatter the crumbled sausage, chopped red onion, quartered artichoke hearts, and roasted red peppers or tomatoes over the cheese. Finish with dollops of pesto and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.
  6. Step 6: Place your cast iron skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden and crispy, and the cheese is bubbling.
  7. Step 7: Once out of the oven, let your Cast Iron Skillet Pizza cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free pizza dough.
  • Substitute Cashew Cream with vegan cream cheese for a different flavor.
  • Try using other plant-based proteins like tempeh or mushrooms if you can't find sausage.
