In another bowl, combine the melted butter and granulated sugar. Use an electric mixer to beat until the mixture is light and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then, add the vanilla extract and blend until fully incorporated.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture while alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the flour mixture, mixing just until combined.
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and continue mixing. Add vanilla extract and heavy whipping cream gradually until you achieve your desired frosting consistency.
Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake.
