Prep Time 15 minutes
Total Time 4 hours
Servings: 8 servings
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: Southern

Ingredients

  • 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1.5 cups cold water
  • 1 3.9-ounce package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla paste or vanilla extract optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 11-ounce box vanilla wafer cookies
  • 6 bananas sliced

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Hand Mixer or Stand Mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula
  • 9x13 inch baking dish

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and cold water until smooth. Then, add the instant vanilla pudding mix, ensuring no lumps remain. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to thicken.
  2. In another bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. If you’re using vanilla paste or extract, add it in during this step. Gently fold the whipped cream into the pudding mixture, being careful not to deflate the cream.
  3. In a 9x13-inch baking dish, start by placing a layer of vanilla wafer cookies at the bottom. Next, add a layer of sliced bananas, followed by a generous layer of the pudding mixture. Repeat these layers until you run out of ingredients, finishing with a layer of pudding on top.
  4. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight if possible. This allows the flavors to meld and the wafers to soften beautifully.
  5. When ready to serve, you can garnish the top with additional whipped cream, banana slices, or even a sprinkle of crushed vanilla wafers for an extra touch. Dive into this delightful dessert and enjoy every creamy bite!

Notes

  • For a more intense banana flavor, mash one of the bananas and mix it into the pudding base.
  • Layer in chocolate chips or use chocolate wafers instead of vanilla for a different taste.
  • Serve within a few days for the best taste and texture, as bananas can brown quickly.
